Senator Cyr wrote Against Eversource Spraying

You should write against it too!!

Now is the time . . .
March 25th, 2017

The Eversource 2017 Yearly Operational Plan (YOP) lists ten Cape towns identified for spraying of herbicides along power lines this year:

Barnstable, Bourne, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis,

Falmouth, Harwich, Orleans, Sandwich, and Yarmouth.

And three towns on Martha’s Vineyard:

Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury

We have an opportunity until Monday March 27th at 5pm to write a comment to the MA Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) against herbicide use by Eversource.  But MDAR will only consider FACT BASED comments.  Below is a list of some facts about these toxic herbicides.  Choose one or more reasons to include in your email explaining why you don’t want chemicals used along power lines to maintain vegetation overgrowth throughout 10 Cape towns and 3 towns on Martha’s Vineyard.

It is important to make your voice heard NOW by contacting MDAR using FACT-BASED comments by 5:00 pm March 27th.

Address emails to:

Michael McClean, MDAR:  Michael.mcclean@state.ma.us

Also CC our State Senator:
Senator Julian Cyr:   Julian@juliancyr.com

*Examples of fact-based comments about the five different herbicides Eversource plans to use:

Eversource should not spray herbicides along the power lines of Cape Cod because……

· Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Rodeo/Roundup, is designated a probable human carcinogen by the World Health Organization in March 2015.

· Glyphosate can cause acute poisoning, kidney and liver damage, endocrine disruption, genotoxicity, neurological damage, immune system dysfunction.

· Glyphosate residues are widespread in the environment, including in rainwater, surface and ground waters and the marine environment.

· Glyphosate has many documented adverse effects on the ecosystem, including effects on honey bees and other pollinators, effects on amphibians and butterflies, effects on soil fertility, biological controls and crop health.  It disrupts the entire ecosystem and the entire food chain.

· Triclopyr, the active ingredient in Garlon 4 is toxic to fish.

· Fosamine ammonium, the active ingredient in Krenite S,  is hazardous to  humans and domestic animals.

· Metsulfuron– Methylthe active ingredient in Escort XP, affects plants in extremely low doses and is affected by drift from wind.

· Imazapyr, the active ingredient in Arsenal, persists in soil and is not supposed to be used near or around water.

If they reach our aquifer, these toxins are difficult or impossible to remove.

*** DEADLINE to write to MDAR is MARCH 27th at 5pm ***

THANK YOU for joining the efforts to prevent unnecessary use of herbicides this way by.  In addition to writing MDAR, please sign the petition.  Please forward this email to your contacts.  Anyone not on our mailing list can join us to receive weekly valuable information.

And THANK YOU to the Boards of Health of the towns of  Yarmouth and Sandwich for writing strong letters to MDAR to protest Eversource’s spraying. Their efforts are greatly appreciated by all.
